How does it all work?

The methods for taking payments online may differ slightly depending on which company you choose to handle the payments, but it usually goes something like this.

1. A customer visits your website, adds items to the shopping basket, then proceeds to the
checkout to buy the items.

2. The customer enters their contact and delivery details on your website.

3. The customer clicks a button to place the order and is then automatically transferred to a secure
website so that they can enter credit card details.

4. Once the customer has supplied the payment details they are transferred back to your website
and the order confirmation page. Here they can print out a copy of the order details.

5. When the order process is completed, you will receive an automated email alert informing you
that a new order has been placed. You can now go to the credit card processing company's
web site and transfer the money directly to your bank account by electronic transfer.

6. To process the order, simply visit the order admin section of your Smart Merchant website
where you will be able to access all the relevant details and print out a delivery / packing note etc.

Using your Own Merchant Account

A merchant account is provided to you by a bank to enable you to take credit card payments. This does not have to be the bank who holds your business account - It pays to shop around to find the best deal.

There is normally an initial set up fee and a monthly rental fee for a processing terminal (swipe machine). We have seen set up fees from as little as £75.00 up to £300.00 + with terminal rental from as little as £1.00 per month up to £30.00 per month. The bank will also charge a percentage for each transaction. Again this depends on the bank and your business category. But it can range from 1.5% to about 5% per transaction. Debit cards such as Switch are cheaper to process -from about 0.10p to 0.30p per transaction.
